摘要

Defending a nation's shores, and regional and global power projection require maritime force. This force uses a multitude of craft sizes, from inflatable rafts to coastal patrol boats. Each craft is specifically designed for its mission. The overriding requirement for maritime forces is to be operational and capable of immediate response with low lead time. To meet this requirement over a sustained period of operation, features of the various vessels must be standardised to streamline maintenance and support. In addition to considerations of performance, armed forces are coming under increasing pressure to be aware of the effect their equipment has on the environment. Clearly the engine components of military vessels are potentially a significant source of pollution and should be carefully examined with regards to present and predicted environmental requirements.
