How to reduce the thousands of articles written on modern naval history to just 42? This has been the daunting task of Andrew Lambert, Professor of Naval History at King's College London. His choice has been eased by his modest exclusion of any of his own many significant articles on the subject and reduced further as he indicates by confining himself to publications in English and by the reluctance of one editor to allow reproduction of articles from his journal; but there have been abundant ready alternatives. Lambert admits that his selection cannot pretend to be comprehensive and does not constitute a 'top ten best articles' approach. The reader may therefore be disappointed not to find the names of authorities such as D. K. Brown, Norman Friedman, Andrew Gordon, Eric Grove, Holger Herwig, Nicholas Lambert, Jon Sumida, or N. A. M. Rodger among those on the contents pages. Instead the editor declares his aim to be 'to show where naval historians are working, and how current approaches differ from those of earlier periods.
