This collection of essays is based upon papers given at the Australian Chief of the Army's Military History conference held in 2007, and is a useful contribution to the growing historiography of World War I. There are 11 chapters addressing the Allied nations (two of which look closely at the British), along with a valuable and insightful chapter on the 'other side of the hill' by Robert T. Foley which examines the state of the German Army during 1917. The book is rounded off with a final chapter by Dan Todman which looks at the way in which popular culture perceives the Third Battle ofYpres (which was, of course, far more thanjust the struggle for the benighted village of Passchendaele) and lasted from 31 July until 10 November.
