Naval architects and marine engineers face an increasing range of routine technical challenges and those requiring more innovation. These include political, economic and regulatory issues that lie largely outside their direct sphere of influence, and they tend to fall into the zone of responsibility of ship owners and operators, government officials and ministers, programme managers and industry leaders. Designers merely deal with their consequences.
