Senior sources within the military have described helicopter capability as a table whose four legs are people, platforms, training and support. If there are shortfalls in any one these areas, the structure becomes unstable.rnThe critical role being played by helicopters in theatres such as Afghanistan is widely recognised. Last year, the UK Secretary of State for Defence said: "Helicopters are used a great deal for moving troops and supplies, instead of more dangerous transport on land, and are crucial to the success of our mission." However, the challenging 'hot and high' conditions, the all pervading sand and dust - combined, of course,rnwith the ever present threat of enemy action - are extremely taxing for aircrew and aircraft operating in these theatres.
