The US Army is expanding the range of requirements for its soldiers' protective eyewear. Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier, the army agency responsible for developing, acquiring, fielding, and sustaining everything US soldier;; wear and carry in combat, is strengthening the laser and chemical protect on capabilities, among others, that soldiers' eyewear will have to provide. These capabilities are provided by army-issued items or commercially available products on PEO Soldier's Authorised Protective Eyewear List (APEL).rnThe APEL is part of PEO Soldier's mission to provide the best equipment possible to soldiers in the shortest possible time. Augmenting the army-issue goggles and spectacles, the APEL offers soldiers a choice of features and styles that they can purchase from commercial vendors. All APEL products are submitted to the army for testing to verify that they meet army requirements and provide a high level of protection. This is critical, since eye injuries often are linked to inadequate usage of protective equipment. Studies by Army Medical Command have shown that there is a 10% reduction in eye injury when the proper eyewear is worn.
