Sovereignty over the Arctic is now a significant international issue. In Canada, as the ice has melted a little more every summer, awareness of the economic potential of its northern territories has concentrated minds at the highest political level, to the extent that the commitment to securing this huge region of wilderness is now a key component of the Canada First Defence Strategy.As Prime Minister Stephen Harper said when introducing the strategy in 2008: "If a country wants to be taken seriously in the world, it must have the capacity to act." For Canadian Forces this has meant refocusing some of its command and logistics capabilities northwards.
