So far, the 21st Century has witnessed global devastation on a scale not seen in living memory. Indeed, the century was not even a month old when mass destruction was caused by the Gujarat earthquake in India. Then, of course, came 9/11. On Boxing Day 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, led to a tsunami that affected 14 countries, with an estimated death toll of over a quarter of a million. Since then, we've seen further earthquakes strike the Kashmir region of India (October 2005), Haiti Qanuary 2010) New Zealand (February 2011) and Japan (March 2011) among other places, causing widespread damage and loss of life.
