The United Nations General Assembly has once again rebuffed Taiwan's bid to join the UN, the 15th straight year the attempt of the island has been thwarted by an overwhelming majority including Pakistan. Taiwan was expelled from the world body in 1971 in favour of China and at that time Pakistan had played a key role in securing UN membership for China. Ever since, Taiwan has been making frantic efforts under the patronage of the United States and some other countries, to regain the seat but this year's defeat is significant both for China and Taiwan. Earlier, Taiwan had been seeking membership under the title of "Republic of China" but this year it applied under the name of "Taiwan", a change of strategy which also did not work.
