'Mr. President'

President Pervez Musharraf's 'shedding his skin' on November 28 has been hailed by some as a victory of the people and a milestone in their struggle against military dictatorship in Pakistan. The truth however is that, it is nothing of the kind. A nation that has been under military rule for most of its existence had begun to associate the uniform worn by the President as personifying the authority that controls their lives and therefore, associates it with their misery and suffering. It is a fact that the President by virtue of the 1973 Constitution is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
