Today's disc surfaces are dramatically different from those of just a few years ago. To support ever-increasing areal-density requirements, parameters such as flying height, disc roughness, and carbon thickness have all been substantially reduced. For example, just a few years ago the fly height of heads in MR disc drives was 2 micro inches, while today the nominal height is 1 micro inch and continues to fall. The successful manufacture of these new discs has required the development of a new generation of burnish heads, demonstrating improved disc yields and less disc damage. Taking advantage of state-of-the-art slider fabrication and HGA assembly processes, these new heads are now in use at several major media-manufacturing companies throughout the world.
