In April 2006, Campina's CEO justinus Sanders officially reopened the company's Lutjewinkel cheese production facility in the Netherlands. It was a rebirth for a cheese making site that had been hit by two fires, in which the cheese production hall and cheese storage were both completely destroyed. The plant's trials began in August 2004, when fire broke out. Milk supply for processing was then shifted to other Dutch plants, including Campina's facility at Bleskensgraaf. However, fire struck again in December 2004 during the course of reconstruction work. As a result, Campina's production volumes for traditional Gouda cheese were lower in 2005, due to the lack of output at Lutjewinkel. Campina spent a total of ?27 million on the project.
