Swiss butter surplus

The price of butter in Switzerland has remained the same despite a surplus in the Swiss butter market. Currently the stocks stand at 5,500 tons. Retail chains such as Coop or Migros are worrying about loss of sales because of "shopping tourism" by Swiss consumers, who are buying dairy products more cheaply in surrounding countries. At the Coop, the company describes the situation as "unsatisfactory." Supermarket Migros notes that Swiss consumers do not accept the price differences, and thus there is growing shopping abroad. The Swiss butter market is not liberalized and is dominated by the two largest dairy groups, Emmi and Cremo, with a total 90% market share. Neither has incentives to price cut, according to sources.
