Nel contempo, si presenta la sfida per nuove generazioni di normative, in cui siano esplicitamente considerate le differenze tra i diversi tipi di terremoto.%Recent earthquakes occurred in USA and Japan have demonstrated that the behaviour of some steel structures was unacceptable, and that the economic impact of physical damage, loss of function, and business interruption were huge. In many cases the damage occurred when both design and detailing have been performed in perfect accordance with the code provisions, showing that something new happened, which were not foreseen in the design practice. The reason of this poor behaviour is mainly due to the inaccuracy of ground motion modeling. Therefore, the need of a more explicit design consideration, which takes full advantage of present available ground motion information delivered by Seismology and Engineering Seismology and the new engineering knowledge, has led to several major efforts throughout the world. The paper deals with the activity to improve the code specifications in the main seismic Countries, USA, Japan, China and Europe Union, considering the seismological particularities for each zone. In the same time, it presents the challenges for new generation of codes, in which the differences in earthquake types must be considered.
