The Shirley Sherwood Gallery is the first public gallery in the world dedicated to botanical art, containing exhibitions from the extensive collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens. The architects Walters and Cohen designed a transparent building with clean lines and uncluttered appearance that makes the most of the views across the surroundings of Kew Gardens. The main space is "a box within a box" because of the need for low light, constant temperature and controlled humidity. The structure is framed in steel with slender hollow section columns supporting a two-way spanning grillage of roof beams. The roof structure, which creates a large column free space over the principal gallery, was designed to be fabricated in long ladder-like sections off-site.
