Forms of self-replication, systems producing their own structure or copies of themselves from themselves, are of fundamental interest to cyberneticians. The DNA molecule reproduces itself and the essential logic of this reproduction is worth examining. In this column we give an exposition of how DNA reproduces itself, and we show how this property of DNA is related to a calculus of distinctions that we call the calculus of extainers and containers.
