Amateur Radio in Public Health & Medical Disasters (ESF#8)

In early January of this year, I received an invitation from the former author of this column, Cory Sickles, WA3UVV, to attend a one-day conference titled "Amateur Radio in Public Health & Medical Disasters - ESF#8" (ESF stands for Emergency Support Functions. See sidebar for a brief description of all 15 subcategories). I invited my AuxComm Leader, John Fergusson, K3PFW,to come along and we traveled about 100 miles north to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey, to join about 180 other hams and medical professionals for a conference on the role of amateur radio in supporting public health and hospitals during disasters (Photo A). Cooper University Medical Center is the designated Medical Coordination Center (MCC) for Southern New Jersey, and it developed the symposium bringing together the amateur radio and healthcare communities.
