Summertime on VHF Go to the Beach or Work Sporadic-E?

Summer is generally a time of relaxation, with vacations, a day at the beach or lake, and cookouts the norm. But for the 6-meter operator, those activities often compete with the amount of shack time necessary to take advantage of the summer sporadic-E (E_s) season. The competition between outdoor fun in the sun and time in front of the radio within the confines of the shack continued for many as the magic on the Magic Band persisted well into July with several major band openings during the month. For most 6-meter enthusiasts, the last week of June into the first week of July historically has been the most productive period of the summer E_s season and once again this year, few if any were disappointed. Representative of what was worked and the extent of the opening(s) can be seen by what Jay Hainline, KA9CFD, EN40, worked on June 30th. When it was all said and done, Jay had logged 28 JA QSOs, 3 QSOs with stations in South Korea, one with a station in the Philippines, and one with a station in Greenland ... all via FT8.
