I recently received a text on my smart-phone at 5:42 a.m. (Photo A), pro-claiming: "Verizon Wireless 9-1-1 Outage Due to a regional Verizon outage. Verizon mobile phones may not be able to reach 9-1-1 or non-emergency numbers in the area at this time. Please use Text to 9-1-1 or another phone carrier if the voice call does not go through." As a broadcast radio news director, I called the non-emergency phone number to my local 9-1-1 center to inquire about the outage, so I could report it to my station's listeners. The operator was puzzled by my request and told me they were not aware of any failure.
