Sewer Management Measurements in the Cologne Combined Wastewater Sewer System

Sicne 1988, water levels have been measured in selected main collectors of the Clonge sewer system. The great majority of sewers lies very flat and has a big storage capacity, which is used both for stormwater treatment as well as for the storage of discharge peaks. Discharges are balanced through the for- mation of backwater in the big sewer cross-section, thus mak- ing optimum use of spare capacities in case of an uneven load in the partial systems due to precipitations. Thus the po- tential for sewer system management is lower than expected.
