MAORIS UPSET OVER EVERTON'S HAKA

Everton Football Club has been accused of "cultural disrespect" after it performed the traditional Maori dance - the haka, to launch its new football strip. Maui Solomon, an intellectual property lawyer who represents several Maori tribes in New Zealand, has written to the football club urging it not to perform the dance again. In February this year, a government settlement recognised the haka as the intellectual property of the Ngati Toa tribe of Maoris. Everton, however, is unrepentant and has vowed to put on a performance of the dance again at the opening match of the premiership season.
