Syntheses, structures and properties of polymetallic complexes prepared from both acyclic and cyclic ligands derived from the dialdehyde l,4-diformyl-2,3-dihydroxybenzene (1), and two close analogues which also feature the 1,4-dicarbonyl-2,3-dihydroxy motif, are reviewed.
