One of the major obstacles to the use of the Internet and World Wide Web for bandwidth- Intensive applications is the relatively slow Speed connection available over the so-called 'last mile' to the user's premises. Combined with the graphics-intensive content of web pages and the many routers and switches that packets must traverse on their way the result is poor performance for many applica- tions. Presentation graphics on organisational websites have become all-important, and many applications, such as online education, require much greater bandwidth than is usually available in order to provide a more usable product and to deliver convenient, timely access for the user.
