When the inaugural issue of Container Shipping & Trade was published, its cover story was an analysis of the prospect of a possible merger between Germany's two largest container shipping lines, Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Sued. However, the sentiment of much of Hamburg's shipping community was that while a marriage between a major player on the trunk east-west deepsea trades and the north-south specialist made sense, on the face of it, there was also a variety of hurdles to be overcome.
