FEEDERS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

There is a growing sense that the container industry could turn the corner in 2017 and a cautious optimism prevails. However, optimism has been misplaced before. A combination of mergers, scrapping and economies of scale have resulted in a closer balance between supply and demand, but there are worries about the 25 ultra large container vessels (ULCVs) due to come into commission in 2017. These are among a total of 72 on order that are above 18,000 teu capacity. While smaller deepsea operators are being forced out of business because they cannot compete against ULCVs, the prospects for feeders of up to 5,000 teu go from strength to strength.
