WASHING MACHINES, DRYERS AND DISHWASHERS IN ITALY

Output of washing machines and washer-dryers reached a record 8.1 mn units in 1997, having risen without interruption since 1994. Production of dryers was 670,000 and of dishwashers almost 2 mn, also a record figure. Imports amounted to 240,000 washing machines and 150,000 dishwashers, representing 14 per cent and 27 per cent respectively of total apparent consumption. Imports of dishwashers have been rising steadily. Italy's exports of domestic appliances are massive: 6.65 mn washing machines and 1.56 mn dishwashers were exported in 1997, amounting in the case of both products to around 80 per cent of total production. Exports of dryers also took 80 per cent of production.
