This paper proposes a novel all digital VSB carrier recovery loop used for HDTV terrestrial transmission. It simply uses Hilbert transforms of the inphase and quadrature components of the VSB baseband signal to generate an accurate phase error signal free of self-noise. This error signal can be used to directly rotate the carrier phase in a feedforward architecture, or to control the NCO in a loop back architecture. Due to its free-of-self-noise nature, the resultant carrier phase noise is extremely small in comparison with traditional FPLL, and the acquisition range is as large as /spl plusmn/200 kHz in our HDTV application. The proposed loop can work properly when the CNR is below 10 dB, and the acquisition is still very fast. Performance analysis and simulation results are given in detail.
