On a daily basis, a large Western U.S. financial services company manages and processes millions of checks, checking and credit-card accounts. Across its facilities, the bank's traders move tens of billions of dollars, with many of those transactions handled through a network of retail branches and automatic teller machines. To keep pace with this kind of volume, the bank relies on a secure infrastructure, at the heart of which are several data centers. A loss of cooling for a few minutes, or an interruption in electrical power for even an instant, could interrupt data-center operations and have severe global repercussions for the bank's business.
