Like the crawler cranes and wrecking balls they replaced, high-reach demolition excavators have become the recognised public image of the demolition industry. But there is a considerable amount of work to be done on a demolition site before these giants put in an appearance, much of it tackled by highly specialised equipment manufactured by similarly specialist companies. A prime example is the Panther 5700 ride-on floor prep system from Industrial Equipment Company in the US. This electrically-powered, rechargeable machine features an angled blade that is capable of removing bonded carpets, wood laminate flooring, carpet and other floor tiles. Capable of running a full day on a single charge, the machine is virtually silent in operation, produces no exhaust emissions or fumes, and makes a productive alternative to manpower in soft strip applications. For contractors looking to achieve much the same result while increasing the utilisation levels of an existing machine, another US company - Outline Products - offers a useful scraper attachment for a skid steer, a machine that is common in demolition fleets throughout the UK.
