摘要

"Have you ever been to a prison? They're not very nice. Forget all that nonsense about them being holiday camps," says Wates key account director Chris Booton, as he begins to explain the project that has seen his teamrndemolish and replace one entire wing at the Category B prison HMP Winchester.rnIt is difficult to doubt that description as Mr Booton details the complexity of having to design and build accommodation for offenders who spend as much as 23 hours a day alone, sometimes using that time to think up more and more ingenious ways of injuring themselves.rn"There are a host of areas we have to consider that are different to standard building projects and the possibility for self-harming is just one of them but there are other areas too," he says.rnThe different building standards have been honed over the years by client the Ministry of Justice, the arm of government that has overall control of all elements of the penal system.
