Value of starts on sites plunges in November

The value of project starts dropped 14 per cent in the three months to the end of November 2010 compared with the same period last year, according to research. Business intelligence unit Glenigan found all but one of the predominately government-funded sectors suffered declining project starts. Civil engineering registered -42.2 on the Glenigan Index, while residential was -10.8 and non-residential was-6.7. The office and retail sectors performed strongly in previous months, but failed to grow in the last three months compared with the same period last year. The number of starts in the hotel and leisure and industrial sectors rose slightly.
