The National Federation of Demolition Contractors has continued its programme of producing detailed guides on specific demolition duties with the publication of its latest guidance notes, this time on the deconstruction of tower blocks. Mark Anthony reports. The public perception and reputation of tower blocks has been something of a snakes and ladders game. Originally designed and received as the panacea to the UK's post-war housing shortage, these seemingly-futuristic concrete and steel edifices have experienced a steady but unremitting fall from grace. Today, the tower block is synonymous with poverty, inner city blight, and sub-standard living conditions.
