Enabling works and platform construction are now under way at Crossrail's Whitechapel Station. Crossrail commenced tendering for the ￡250m main construction contract for the station this week, with works due to start in late 2011. Construction preparatory works started in June 2010 to facilitate the construction of the new station. These works involve simplifying the existing underground track layout, building a steel reinforced concrete deck above the London Overground platforms and reinforcing a storm sewer under Durward Street ahead of tunnelling activity.
