THE 12-HOUR BRIDGE DEMOLITION

As plans for the project progressed, it became obvious that the existing twin-span service bridge located almost at the tie-in point of the westbound on-slip would have to go. But the demolition of a reinforced concrete bridge across one of the busiest sections of motorway on the network is no easy task. Specialist contractor Beattie Demolition, based in Kitsyth, was brought in to carry out the work during a single night's possession. The closure started around 10pm. Mats were placed on the carriageway to protect its surface before work on bringing down the bridge began. The demolition plant and equipment was brought onsite at around 11pm, with two machines breaking out the concrete on the bridge decks on the northern and southern side of the central pier.
