Steel has dominated the multistorey, non-domestic building market since the late 1980s and enjoys a market share of nearly 70 per cent. The cost of fire protection is included in the overall price that has afforded steel its position; it is not an additional extra. Advances in the science of fire protection systems over the years have further reduced the costs involved, making steel construction increasingly economic.
