Over the last decade we have seen a major change in the way we plan, design and construct our buildings. Bolstered by the growth of a handful of green building councils to a worldwide network of almost 100 today, sustainable buildings have grown from a niche interest to what is increasingly being seen as the industry standard. Why? Because of the growing business case for green buildings. Around the world, the motivation to build green has shifted from being simply the right thing environmentally to being the sensible thing financially. In the UK, developers such as British Land, retailers including Marks & Spencer and contractors - Balfour Beatty, for one - all realise that building green benefits the bottom line.
