A £114m sewer improvement scheme involving the construction of 13 large diameter shafts, installation of 4.5 km of tunnel and 9 km of rising main, screens chamber, pumping station and outfall plus all associated manholes and pipework is under way as part of United Utilities' capital programme in the North-wes.t. Peri is providing the formwork and falsework solutions for the project, which began in February 2010 and is set to be completed by April 2014. The project is being undertaken by KMI Water, a joint venture between Kier Infrastructure and Overseas, J Murphy & Sons and Interserve Construction, and is part of United Utilities' overall unsatisfactory intermittent discharged scheme to improve the quality of bathing waters off the Fylde coast. The scheme involves the construction of a 3.5 km long, 2.75 m internal diameter tunnel, which is 30 m below ground to the west of Preston. The tunnel features eight tunnel shafts and will hold up to 40 million litres of storm water to prevent overflows discharging to the River Ribble. Five sewer overflow shafts of varying depths and diameters have been constructed around Preston to spill flows into the new interceptor tunnel system, via connecting micro-tunnels.
