When the Timbrel vault design for the new hospitality cellars beneath the BB&R building was first unveiled, it caused much head-scratching in the Gallif ord Try site team. This is an ancient form of construction that relies on the adhesion of a pattern of several layers of thin clay tiles sandwiched together using a fast-setting mortar. The resultant tile laminated arch ismuchmore slender than those of traditional stone and is capable of supporting much higher loads. Following a rethink, Mr Ryan went back to his subcontractor list from one of his previous projects, the St Pancras Chambers building.
