Wall and ceiling lining products (reaction to fire)

The materials used to line walls and ceilings can contribute significantly to the development of fire in a building. A small item on fire adjacent to a wall can rapidly develop into a much larger fire if the wall lining is flammable. 'Reaction to fire' defines what happens when a material is exposed to a controlled fire exposure in a reaction to fire test. Many different parameters can be measured to determine if the material contributes to fire growth, eg by releasing significant quantities of heat or by spreading over the surface; or contributes almost nothing because it is mostly made from inorganic material. Other parameters, such as the production of smoke and flaming droplets, are also evaluated.
