PJ Carey (Contractors) has carried out a number of works packages at the Rathbone Square development in central London. As principal contractor, the project team has worked with Erith Group to complete the soft strip and demolition of the decommissioned Royal Mail head office building, as well as the excavation and construction of the complex basement. During the first phase of demolition works, Careys carried out the top-down demolition of an existing seven-storey Royal Mail Building, down to basement level. The team used 45-tonne demolition excavators that were hoisted by crane onto the various levels of the building. Scudder broke out the concrete slabs and foundations to complete the demolition, while Careys subsequently installed the temporary works.The team has combined top-down and open excavation across the site and deployed Heidi, its specialist telescopic clamshell excavator, to facilitate programme advantage.
