The City of London Corporation has approved plans for its biggest housebuilding programme in more than three decades. The local authority has committed to delivering 3,700 new homes by 2025 and will build them on land it owns across London, as well as its existing social housing estates. The City owns social housing estates in six London boroughs -Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Tower Hamlets - as well as the Square Mile itself. There are currently 2,000 homes on these estates, but the council said that number could increase by 700.
