Things are moving so fast in UK government circles at the moment that it's becoming increasingly difficult to guess what will happen next. While I was writing this piece, the number of MPs backing Boris Johnson's plan to leave the EU with or without a deal by 31 October changed. First Philip Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats, and then, following dramatic events in parliament, Mr Johnson withdrew the Tory whip from 21 of his own MPs who opposed his plan, effectively leaving himself as the leader of a minority government.
