On 21 August 2017, Big Ben's chimes came to a temporary stop, not to be restarted until 2021. At the time, members of the public were encouraged to come and listen to its final 'bongs', and some politicians decried the fact that it would be silenced for so long. But for PHD Modular Access, the project came to be a highlight of 2018. The firm's complex scaffolding installed around the iconic 96-m Elizabeth Tower topped out and enabled ongoing works to progress on restoring the Westminster institution. The scaffolding design was comprised of 24,000 components and required a specialist collaborative design team to work on what is believed to be the tallest freestanding scaffold in the UK, if not the world.
