Specialist contractors have faced a hugely turbulent market during their most recent financial periods, as covered by this year's CN Specialists Index. Compiling this year's list of the UK's biggest specialist contractors has revealed that the Brexit effect really hit the industry in mid-2017, as jittery clients slammed the brakes on projects. Nationwide, specialist contractors saw work evaporate from their order books. This made conditions tougher in a market still recovering from the last recession. Cashflow was squeezed and last October we saw one of the industry's biggest corporate failures in recent years when Lakesmere,the top building envelope firm in 2017's Specialists Index, went into administration.
