The construction industry ended 2017 on a soft note, according to the Construction Trade Survey for 2017 Q4. Construction product manufacturers’ sales increased during Q4, but expectations for the year ahead weakened. Main contractors, specialist contractors and SME builders also reported an increase in output or workloads during the quarter but, again, forward-looking indicators pointed to a period of slower or falling activity over the next 12 months. Q4 was most challenging for civil engineering contractors, however, with the first falls in activity and new orders reported in four years.
