Shortly after a project to upgrade of the B2 federal highway in Germany began, it became evident that the composition of the excavated soil made it unsuitable for hauling away with conventional construction site trucks. The B2 is one of Germany's oldest highways and a stretch of 3.6km is being widened from two to four lanes near to the town of Roth. The project calls for the excavation of 275,000m~3 of earth and is scheduled for completion in 2014.
