Work on the New Wear Crossing in Sunderland, in the north east of England, is intensifying with the installation of more than 900 concrete piles into the embankment along the River Wear. The construction team in charge of the £117 million (€163.86 million) project have begun installing the piles along the south side of the river with the work continuing through the autumn of 2015. They said the piles would allow contractors to establish secure, deep foundations for the first exit road leading from the bridge into the Pallion area. The new bridge is to cross the River Wear between Wessington Way in Castletown and European Way in Pallion. It is the first bridge to be built over the Wear in the city for more than 40 years.
