Kobelco America's product manager, George Lumpkins, is of the opinion that most operators don't use the various work-mode or power-mode settings available on most of today's hydraulic excavators. The reason, he thinks, is that good operators want to feel that a machine is totally under their control, and pushing buttons on the machine's monitor to limit all-out performance somehow diminishes that control. But on the other hand, says Lumpkins, well-designed operator-assist systems really can help an excavator (and the operator) work more efficiently at specific tasks. So, is there a middle ground here?
