Equipment Theft Nears $1 Billion Annually

According to Courtney DeMillio, associate vice president of LoJack Commercial, the National Insurance Crime Bureau estimates that nearly $1 billion is lost annually, nationwide, through the theft of construction equipment and tools. In this regard, Lojack publishes an annual study, Construction Equipment Theft and Recovery in the United States, which reviews theft trends specific to construction equipment and tools equipped with the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System. LoJack's latest study indicates that light- utility vehicles, work trucks, and trailers are the items stolen most often, followed in frequency of theft by backhoe loaders and wheel loaders, utility equipment (generators, air compressors, welders, and light towers), skid steer loaders, mini excavators, and forklifts. In 2013, the study reports, 51 manufacturers were represented among equipment stolen and recovered; five brands, however, represented 61 percent of those thefts-Ford, Bobcat, John Deere, Caterpillar, and Case.
