Comparative assessment of rheological property characteristics for unfoamed and foamed asphalt binder

Due to the increasing market for foamed bitumen in the warm mix asphalt technology in order to lower asphalt mixture production temperatures, there is a strong need to investigate the rheological property characteristics of unfoamed and foamed asphalt binder. Three asphalt binders (PG64-22, Trinidad Lake Asphalt modified bitumen, SBS modified bitumen) used in this study were foamed in the laboratory. The high temperature performance, low temperature performance, temperature sensitivity and fatigue resistance of unfoamed and foamed binders were investigated and comparatively assessed through a series of laboratory tests. Results showed that, the foam processing slightly reduced high-temperature performance and temperature sensitivity, while improve the resistance for fatigue cracking. It can be tentatively put forward that some moisture bubbles may still trapped in the binder samples when testing, which may cause the rheological property change. The binder type played a key role in determining its performance changes after foamed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
